Nigerian Correctional Service
The occasion of the 2024 celebration of the Girl Child Day was adequately marked at the Medium Security Custodial Centre Benin (Old) in a collaboration between the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) Women Commission (PWC), Warri Zone.
Mrs. Mejire Ese of the PWC who spoke on behalf of other members appreciated the warm reception accorded them and said that the pursuit of PWC is to ensure the protection of the rights of the female employees of the oil and gas sector of Nigeria and to empower young girls and women through advocacy and developmental programs. Hence, the decision to extended their solidarity to the female inmates of the Custodial Centre.
She also said that the Day of the Girl Child celebration at the Custodial Centre is to give hope and support to the inmates, to assure them that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Activities carried out include interactive session with the inmates, giving of pep talks, presentation of welfare items and donation of materials to support skills acquisition that will translate to self development and employment for the inmates on their release from custody.
In his remarks, the Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the facility DCC Eromosele Henry on behalf of the Controller General of Corrections CGC Haliru Nababa FICMC MFR mni and the Edo State Controller of Corrections CCS Philomena Emehinola Esq. expressed appreciation to the PWC team for their thoughtfulness and commitment to the good of the entire society by supporting the less privileged.
He also said that the support towards the training of the inmates will further increase the capacity, performances and peace of the Custodial Centre in achieving the mandate of inmates reformation, rehabilitation and eventual reintegration back to their family and the larger society. He called on members of the public both private and public to emulate PENGASSAN WOMEN COMMISSION.
The Day of The Girl Child is marked annually in October and the theme for this year 2024 Celebration is "Girls' vision of the future".
