NCoS KANO COMMAND RECORDS 151 NON-CUSTODIAL SENTENCES IN 1ST QUARTER, ADVANCES DECONGESTION DRIVE

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has recorded a total of 151 non-custodial sentences in the first quarter of the year, reinforcing ongoing efforts to decongest custodial centres and promote alternative justice measures across the state.

The milestone, derived from reports received from courts across Kano State, reflects the increasing adoption of non-custodial sentencing by judicial officers, particularly in cases involving minor offences. This approach aligns with international best practices aimed at fostering rehabilitation while reducing overcrowding in custodial facilities.

A breakdown of the first quarter data indicates that:

• Magistrates’ Courts secured 85 convictions under non-custodial sentences;

• High Courts recorded 6 convictions; and

• Shari’a Courts accounted for 60 convictions.

The Kano State Non-Custodial Unit remains fully operational, driven by the active collaboration of Judges, Magistrates, and Shari’a Court Judges who continue to effectively implement alternatives to incarceration.

Non-custodial sentencing, as provided under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, includes measures such as community service, probation, parole, restorative justice, and other court-directed interventions. These measures are designed to address custodial congestion while facilitating the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society.

The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, fsi, commended the judiciary for its sustained synergy with the Service in advancing non-custodial sentencing. He described the development as a progressive and impactful approach consistent with global standards in modern corrections administration.

He further appreciated the Officer in Charge of the Non-Custodial Unit, Assistant Controller of Corrections Musa Muhammad Kibiya, for his leadership and commitment to the effective implementation of non-custodial programmes within the Command.

The Kano State Command reaffirms its commitment to strengthening alternative sentencing frameworks as a strategic pathway to rehabilitation, reduction of recidivism, and enhancement of public safety.
