The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has recorded a remarkable performance at the maiden National Athletics Masters Championships, winning a total of 26 medals and finishing second overall among participating Institution.
The three-day championship, held from May 1 to 3, 2026 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, brought together elite veteran athletes from across the country. Team NCoS distinguished itself with an outstanding display of discipline, resilience, and competitive excellence.
At the end of the competition, the Service secured a total of 18 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze medals, placing it firmly among the top-performing teams at the national event.
Reacting to the achievement, the Controller-General of Corrections (CGC), Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, commended the athletes for the outstanding outing, describing the achievement as a testament to discipline, resilience, excellence and the enduring spirit of the Service.
He emphasised that sporting activities remains a vital component of the Service’s reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration mandate, fostering physical fitness, mental wellbeing, teamwork, and positive social values among personnel and inmates alike. The CGC assured the team of sustained institutional support and reiterates his commitment to strengthening sports development across all commands of the Service.
Also speaking, the Officer in Charge of Sports, Assistant Controller of Corrections Femi Elemowu, expressed pride in the team’s accomplishment, noting that the athletes demonstrated remarkable determination and professionalism throughout the competition.
He further disclosed that the Controller-General has continued to prioritise the welfare of sportsmen and women in the Service, adding that all approved allowances were promptly paid, alongside other forms of support designed to motivate and enhance performance.
Elemowu revealed that preparations were already underway for the next phase of the championships scheduled to hold in Edo State, with athletes intensifying training in anticipation of another strong outing.
He also acknowledged the support of the Deputy Controller-General in charge of Health and Social Welfare, Idris Mohammed, describing him as a committed leader who consistently encourages and celebrates the achievements of personnel.
In his remarks, the team coach, Superintendent of Corrections Chukwu, commended the unity and team spirit among the athletes, while highlighting the positive impact of the current administration’s emphasis on sports development within the Service.
The impressive outing by Team NCoS has not only earned national recognition but also reaffirmed the Service’s growing stature in competitive athletics.
With renewed focus and determination, the athletes are poised to building on this success as they continue to make the Service proud in subsequent competitions.
