JAIL DELIVERY: 13 INMATES REGAIN FREEDOM IN ONDO STATE

In a strategic move to decongest custodial centres and strengthen justice sector reforms, the Honourable Chief Judge of Ondo State, Justice Olusegun Odusola, has approved the release of thirteen (13) inmates during a routine jail delivery exercise at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Akure.

The exercise underscores the commitment of the judiciary to uphold humane custody, expedite justice delivery, and address congestion within custodial facilities in line with global best practices.

During the visit, the Chief Judge emphasized the importance of inmate welfare, directing that those suffering from chronic health conditions be immediately transferred to appropriate medical facilities for urgent care.

The Controller of Corrections, Ondo State Command, Charles Oyewole, who was represented by the Officer-in-Charge of the facility DCC K. A. Ojo, commended the Honourable Chief Judge and his entourage for the timely intervention. He highlighted the prevailing congestion level within the centre and reiterated the need for sustained collaboration between the Ondo State Government and the Nigerian Correctional Service to effectively address the challenge.

A breakdown of the exercise indicates that:

• Thirteen (13) inmates were released unconditionally

• Four (4) inmates were referred for specialized Medicare with costs borne by the State Government

• Bail conditions of two (2) inmates were relaxed

In his closing remarks, the Chief Judge advised the released inmates to embrace lawful means of livelihood and avoid actions that could lead to reoffending, stressing the importance of reintegration and personal responsibility.

The Nigerian Correctional Service, Ondo State Command, remains committed to its mandate of safe custody, humane treatment, and the reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of inmates.
