Federal Government Upgrades Kuje and Suleja Custodial Centres for Improved Inmate Rehabilitation

The Federal Government of Nigeria has implemented significant upgrades to the Medium Security Custodial Centres in Kuje and Suleja, aimed at enhancing living conditions and advancing the rehabilitation of inmates.

During a facility tour on Tuesday, Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Sylvester Nwakuche MFR,mni attributed these developments to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming correctional facilities into centers for rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates into society.

Key Upgrades and Innovations

The upgrades include among others, the expansion and modernization of the medical clinic, now equipped with advanced medical technologies such as an ultramodern scanner, physiotherapy equipment, an X-ray machine, and a fully operational medical laboratory. These improvements aim to meet inmates' healthcare needs, promoting their overall well-being.

Additionally, a state-of-the-art Command and Control Unit has been constructed, enabling real-time monitoring of the facilities and enhancing security operations.

Speaking on these developments, Mr. Nwakuche said:

"The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has demonstrated exceptional dedication to improving the welfare of both inmates and personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service. These upgrades reflect the administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for rehabilitation and reformation."

Commitment to Professionalism and Integrity

The NCoS has also emphasized a zero-tolerance policy for corruption, introducing merit-based promotions to boost morale and foster a culture of excellence within the service. Mr. Nwakuche warned personnel against misconduct, stating that disciplinary measures would be enforced to uphold professionalism and the agency's integrity.

"Our goal is to ensure that all inmates are humanely and securely detained while providing them with opportunities for rehabilitation and societal reintegration," he added.

A Renewed Focus on Rehabilitation

These upgrades are a testament to the Federal Government’s renewed focus on reforming the nation’s correctional system, turning custodial centers into facilities that prioritize rehabilitation, healthcare, and reintegration.

As the government continues to advance its reform agenda, the improvements at Kuje and Suleja are expected to set a new standard for correctional facilities across Nigeria.
