DG NCCSALW Visits NCoS HQ

In a renewed commitment to enhancing inter-agency collaboration for national security, the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons has partnered with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to bolster operational efficiency and intelligence sharing.

This strategic partnership was reinforced during a courtesy visit by the Director General of NCCSALW, DIG Johnson Kokumo, mni (Rtd), to the Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, at the NCoS National Headquarters, Abuja.

In his remarks, the Director General appreciated the warm reception and commended NCoS for its important role in criminal justice administration. He provided an overview of the Centre’s mandate, emphasizing its efforts to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which remains a significant driver of violence in Nigeria. The DG further highlighted areas of possible collaboration, including:

i. Intelligence sharing to track and monitor illicit arms,

ii. Weapon training to enhance professional handling and control, and

iii. Marking and profiling of weapons to improve accountability and traceability.

In response, the Acting CGC welcomed the DG NCCSALW and his delegation, acknowledging the strong relationship between the two agencies. He reaffirmed NCoS's commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Centre, particularly in the areas of capacity building on weapon handling and enhanced security strategies within custodial centres and facilities.

The Acting CGC emphasized that national security remains a shared responsibility, requiring sustained synergy among key security institutions to combat security threats.

The visit underscored the importance of a holistic, multi-agency approach in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and reaffirmed the commitment of both agencies to fostering a safer and more secure society.
