CONTROLLER GENERAL OF CORRECTIONS VISITS MANAGING DIRECTOR, NDDC TO STRENGTHEN TIES IN PORT HARCOURT

The Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ndidi Sylvester Nwakuche MFR, Mni, paid a courtesy visit to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Commission (NDDC), Dr Samuel Ogbukwu, at the Headquarters in Port Harcourt. 


In his speech, the Controller General appreciated the exiting relationship between the Nigerian Correctional Service and the NDDC, stating that lighting up the Custodial Centre and it's environment with solar street lights is well commendable, including the provision of medical facilities to the Inmates. 


The CGC took the time to state the mandate of the service that it has moved beyond Incaceration to Corrections through the Reformation, Rehabilitation and Reintegration as empowered by the Nigerian Correctional service Act 2019 as Amended. 

The CGC also highlighted the good working relationship between the National Open University (NOUN), and Joint Administration Matriculation Board (JAMB), to enable Inmate get basic education, and they have been graduating with flying colours. 


While concluding his speech, the CGC, requested for more synergy in the area of Training Inmates on different trades like Carpentary, Tailoring, shoe /Bead making, etc. for them to be useful to themselves and the society at large when they are eventually released and won't go back to crime. 


In his response, the Managing Director and CEO of NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbukwu assured that the Commission will assist with training and skills acquisition for the Inmates in the region, following the long standing partnership, and explore various ways of including them in the Commission's yearly Youth Training Programs, same way the Correctional Service has been included in the Operation Light Up Niger Delta Program, to ensure the Custodial Centres and it's environment is well illuminated, as darkness promotes criminality. 


The NDDC Boss also took the time to appreciate the new innovations of the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as he described him as one of the shinning lights of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Administration, following his achievements, which are quite commendable. 


Finally, Dr Samuel Ogbukwu urged the Controller General to flush out the bad eggs in the service for a better Correctional Service to emerge. 


After the Courtesy visit to the NDDC, the CGC and his team took the time to visit the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Port Harcourt to see the staff, Inmates and ongoing Structures in the yard.
