The Acting Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, MFR, mni, today, 11th February 2025, received a delegation from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Nigeria, led by Muchaneta Mundopa, the UNODC Programme Coordinator for Prison and Penal Reform, on a courtesy visit.
In his remarks, the Acting CGC commended UNODC for its sustained partnership and the various reformatory initiatives aimed at enhancing the Nigerian Correctional Service capacity to fulfill its statutory mandate. He emphasized that a structured and well-managed inmate classification framework is fundamental to an effective correctional management system, as proper classification enhances individualized case management and mitigates the risks associated with inmate contamination.
Speaking during the visit, Muchaneta Mundopa expressed confidence in the leadership of the Acting CGC and presented the UNODC proposed programmes lineup for the year 2025.
Furthermore, the visit focused on advancing the implementation of the inmate classification working document, recently developed through the collaborative efforts of UNODC and the Nigerian Correctional Service. This initiative is designed to strengthen case management strategies for improved security, reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration within custodial centres/facilities.
Other members of the delegation included Melissa Omene and Femi Ajayi, UNODC National Programme Officers on Prison and Penal Reforms.
