In a heartwarming demonstration of continued synergy between the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) FCT Command and traditional leadership, Controller of Corrections, FCT Command, Christopher Peter Jen, has handed over ex-inmate Abdulkadir Mohammed to Aguma of Gwagwalada as part of ongoing reintegration efforts by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
Abdulkadir Mohammed, an indigene of Gwagwalada who served a four-year, four-month sentence, acquired valuable shoe-making skills during his time in custody. As a testament to his reformation, he was equipped with a shoe filing machine to launch his entrepreneurial journey. In a symbolic gesture of reformation, Abdulkadir presented a pair of shoes he made to the traditional leader as a gift and testament to his transformation.
Controller Jen appealed to the Aguma and the broader Gwagwalada community to provide Abdulkadir with a space to establish his shoe-making business, leveraging the skills he honed in custody. He further urged the community to shun stigmatization of ex-offenders, emphasizing that they are truly reformed and ready for seamless reintegration into society.
"This handover underscores our shared goal of turning custodial sentences into opportunities for transformation," said Controller Jen. "We call on all stakeholders to support these reformed individuals in building productive lives."
Bala Waziri, representing the Aguma, expressed appreciation for the gesture and pledged community support for Abdulkadir's fresh start. He further extended his profound appreciation to the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche MFR, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to offender rehabilitation and reintegration across the nation. Adding that indeed that Nigerian Correctional Service is truly Correctional in its activities urging more public support for the safety of the society.
The event highlights NCOS's ongoing efforts to promote vocational training, rehabilitation, and collaborative partnerships for sustainable offender reintegration, while reducing recidivism.
